Fall 2026 - Adv Beg Vernacular Jazz

Ages 18+ | 1 recent session of Vernacular jazz experience required

Service Description

Step into the rich tradition of Vernacular Jazz - a family of social dance styles that includes the Charleston, Lindy Hop, and Authentic (Solo) Jazz. Rooted in African American communities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these dances celebrate rhythm, musicality, improvisation, and individuality while laying the foundation for many dance styles we know today. Designed for dancers with some prior dance experience, this class introduces essential Vernacular Jazz vocabulary through skill-building exercises, rhythmic drills, improvisation, and choreography. As you develop technique and confidence, you'll explore the movement qualities, musical influences, and cultural context that make this style both timeless and deeply influential. Whether you're looking to broaden your dance education, strengthen your musicality, or simply experience the joy and energy of Vernacular Jazz, this class offers an engaging and welcoming introduction to one of dance history's most influential art forms. ATTIRE: Wear clothing that allows you to move freely while helping you feel like your most confident dancing self. Leggings, joggers, dance pants, shorts, tanks, or tees tees are all great options. Please wear clean sneakers that are dedicated to dance class and have not been worn outdoors. FOOTWEAR: We recommend sneakers with a smooth, flexible sole and minimal tread to allow for safe pivoting, quick footwork, and ease of movement. Please avoid shoes with thick soles or deep tread, as they can limit movement and increase the risk of injury. CLASS SCHEDULE: This 10-week session runs from Sept 27 - Dec 4. The price shown is for the entire session. OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY: This fall, dancers enrolled in select classes will have the opportunity to perform in TDF Stage Sessions on December 4. Designed as a low-pressure performance experience, Stage Sessions gives dancers the chance to perform their class choreography on a real stage for an audience of fellow TDF dancers. There are no auditions, no additional rehearsals, and no tickets to sell. Your instructor will prepare your class piece during your regular class time. Participation is completely optional, making this a great opportunity for dancers who want to experience the excitement of performing while building confidence in a supportive community.
