Summer 2026 - Intro to Vernacular Jazz
Ages 17+ | No experience required
Service Description
Vernacular Jazz Dance is a vibrant, energetic style deeply rooted in the African American communities of the early 20th century. Built on improvisation, rhythm, and connection to music, Vernacular Jazz celebrates individuality and the joy of movement. In this new class offering we will focus on many of the original jazz dances of the 1920s–1940s, including but not limited to iconic moves like the Charleston, Suzie Q, Apple Jacks, and Shorty George. During this session you can expect to learn vernacular jazz steps, explore/play with your connection to the music, and put it all together by learning choreography. Whether you're new to Jazz or looking to deepen your dance repertoire, this class welcomes you. We hope you join us in connecting to the roots of Jazz dance! LEVEL: This technique based class is for all levels of dancer. ATTIRE: Danceable attire and clean sneakers not worn in from outside (soles cleaned and tread free from stones). Socks or bare feet also ok. CLASS SCHEDULE: This 6-week session runs from July 12 - August 21. The price shown is for the entire session.
